Synchronous Firefly Viewing Event

- Dates: The event typically takes place in late May or early June, lasting for about two weeks.
- Parking Reservations: Visitors must acquire a vehicle reservation via a lottery system to manage access. The lottery opens on April 26 and closes on April 29, with a total of 1,120 vehicle reservations distributed for the eight-day event (140 per day).
- Preferred Arrival Time: Visitors are encouraged to arrive between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Late arrivals after 8:15 p.m. are not permitted.
- Vehicle Restrictions: Only passenger vehicles with a maximum occupancy of 7 people are allowed. Commercial use is prohibited, and the lottery winner must occupy the vehicle and present a matching photo ID.
Viewing Area and Safety
The primary viewing areas for the synchronous fireflies are the Jakes Creek and Little River trails. It’s important to note that pets are prohibited on these trails. Visitors are encouraged to bring low-powered red lighting to minimize disruption to the fireflies’ synchronous flashing behavior, and they should also turn off their interior and exterior vehicle lights.

Camping and Amenities
The Elkmont Campground, located within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offers a convenient option for visitors. The campground is open from March 8 to December 1, 2024, and it features 200 tent/RV campsites and 20 walk-in sites, as well as restrooms and other amenities.
It’s important to note that visitors are not allowed to bring their own firewood into the park unless it bears the USDA-APHIS-PPQ or state certification. Certified heat-treated firewood is available for sale in the surrounding communities.
History and Restoration
The Elkmont area has a rich history, as it was once a logging camp and resort town for wealthy vacationers. The National Park Service is currently working to restore the old buildings in the area, preserving the history of the structures.
To date, nineteen buildings in Elkmont have been restored and preserved, including the Appalachian Clubhouse and several historic cabins. These restoration efforts help to showcase the area’s unique heritage and provide visitors with a glimpse into the past.
